MSSC has several members whose parents or grandparents were also MSSC members. But perhaps the family with the widest and deepest MSSC roots is the Hagans, which is on its fourth generation of MSSC members.
The family’s first MSSC member was Martin Hagan, MD, who joined MSSC shortly after coming to Wichita in 1904 as an intern for pioneering physician Andrew H. Fabrique. He served as MSSC vice president in 1915-1916. Hagan, who practiced in Wichita for 50 years, was the first person to do an X-ray at St. Francis Hospital and founded its radiology department. Three of Hagan’s children — Francis, C. Thomas and Daniel — became physicians and MSSC members.
Francis J. Hagan, MD, who practiced from 1940 to 1986, was a general practitioner at St. Francis Hospital. His son, Stephen F. Hagan, MD, is a pulmonologist and MSSC member who retired in 2023. Three of Francis’ grandchildren are also physicians: Stephen’s daughter, Kelly M. Byrd, DO, a pediatrician with Children’s Mercy Kansas City; Patrick Kelly, MD, an oncologist in Florida; and Brian Kelly, MD, a vascular surgeon in Florida. (Francis’ brother-in-law Bart N. Lies, MD, was also an MSSC member, as were children James E. Lies, MD, and Richard B. Lies, MD.)
Thomas Hagan, MD, who practiced from 1944 until 1999, was the first cardiologist in Wichita and the first to perform an EKG. He was one of the first faculty members in internal medicine at KUSM-Wichita and was an MSSC board member 1976-1978. Two of his sons, Robert and Phillip, also became physicians and MSSC members.
Robert C. Hagan, MD, is a gastroenterologist who practiced from 1983 to 2016 and is affiliated with Kansas Gastroenterology. His son, Michael T. Hagan, MD, was a gastroenterologist in Kansas City.
Phillip F. Hagan, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon with Advanced Orthopaedic Associates and was an MSSC board member 2020-2022. Two of his and his wife’s (MSSC member Margaret Hagan, MD) children are physicians: Maxwell Hagan, MD, a family medicine resident at KUSM-W and fourth-generation MSSC member, and Grace A. Hagan, MD, an internal medicine resident at the Mayo Clinic.
Daniel J. Hagan, MD, Martin’s third physician son, was a general practitioner/radiologist. He was an MSSC member from 1947 until 1957 before moving to St. Louis. Daniel’s granddaughter Julia Hagan, MD, is an ob-gyn in Austin, Texas.
When asked by the Wichita Business Journal in 2023 why he chose a career in healthcare, Phillip Hagan noted that “several individuals in my family were involved in medicine.” Truly an understatement.
