Wichita is a hidden gem for medical practice

by Jany Moussa, MD —

As physicians, we often hear stories of burnout, frustration with bureaucracy and increasing disconnection from the joy of practicing medicine. These challenges are real and widespread, but I believe Wichita stands apart in meaningful ways. This month I want to reflect on why Wichita remains one of the most rewarding places in America to practice medicine.

A collaborative medical community

In Wichita, we are fortunate to have a medical culture that emphasizes cooperation over competition. Our private practices, academic institutions and hospital systems communicate and collaborate in ways that enhance patient care and physician satisfaction. I’ve personally experienced this spirit of teamwork over the years, and I know many of you have as well.

A place where education and mentorship thrive

Wichita is home to robust residency and fellowship training programs, as well as two medical schools: the KU School of Medicine-Wichita and the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine. This gives us a unique opportunity to shape the future of healthcare through both education and mentorship.

I am proud to serve as the medical director for internal medicine education at the Via Christi Family Medicine Program, and I continue to be inspired by the caliber and curiosity of our medical trainees. We have the opportunity and the responsibility to mentor and retain this next generation of physicians by showing them what a meaningful and balanced career in medicine looks like.

Cost of living supports quality of life

Unlike many cities where physicians must fight to balance income with housing, education and childcare costs, Wichita offers a much more sustainable life. Our lower cost of living means more freedom to focus on what matters: our families, our patients and our well-being.

Room to grow, room to lead

Whether in clinical care, research or leadership, Wichita offers space for physicians to make a real impact. You’re not just another cog in the wheel here – you’re part of shaping the direction of healthcare in our community. And through the Medical Society of Sedgwick County, we are working to amplify that influence even further.

Let’s tell our story

We need to do more than just appreciate Wichita among ourselves; we need to spread the word. Recruiting physicians has become harder across the country, but we have a compelling story to share.

Wichita isn’t just a great place to live; it’s a great place to practice. Let’s make that part of our recruitment, our mentorship and our advocacy moving forward.

Thank you for all that you do for your patients and for our profession. I hope you’ll join me in lifting up Wichita – not just as our home but as a model for what medical practice can and should be.
